As I sit down to write this day, there are two words which are etched in my mind and they are “be thankful.” Perhaps, the words “be thankful” are etched in my mind because of what I have endured this past year in regards to my health. Today, I am thankful because I have progressed a good distance in terms of my heath from the end of May, when my health was so poor, until now. Some days are still more challenging than others. However, I am so much better than I was just a short time ago. I certainly have reason to be thankful as we embark upon this season of giving thanks. The truth is most of us have some reason to be thankful. For those who need a little help getting into the Thanksgiving mood perhaps the following thoughts will help.

Be thankful if you have a warm place to stay because there are many people who have no place to stay. Be thankful if you have just one person you can say “I love you” to because sharing those words makes life worth living and not everyone is blessed to do so. Be thankful if you have someone to hug before you go to sleep tonight because those are the special people who help make this world meaningful. Be thankful if your life is filled with hope because there are so many who feel as though life is hopeless. Be thankful if you have someone to walk beside you when the days turn dark because journeying through such times can be difficult enough.

Be thankful if you have plans to be with family this Thanksgiving because there will be many people who spend that day alone. Be thankful if you have the ability to move about on your own power because some people must rely on others, or some form of technology, to help them get around. Be thankful if you had the pleasure of choosing what clothes you would wear today because some people have only one set of clothes to wear. Be thankful for the burnt rolls or the imperfect pie someone else prepared because they spent life’s precious gift called time preparing it. Be thankful if you have ever grieved over losing someone because not everyone gets to experience that kind of love in this life.

Hopefully, you found something in the list above that spoke to you. Something to be thankful for in your life. I urge you to take time to truly be thankful, not only during this week of Thanksgiving, but in the weeks to come. I also urge you to take time this week to visit someone in the nursing home so that you may brighten their day while they have the privilege of brightening your day. May the words be thankful be more than mere words. May they be the essence of who we really are—a thankful people! Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and cards that have been sent my way. They are one more reason for me to be thankful!
