Sunrise Rotarian Larry Schieber spoke earlier this month to club members about the issues surrounding prescription drug pricing. He said the Pharmacy Benefit Managers, the subject of much scrutiny and investigation in recent months, are the main factor controlling what consumers pay for drugs. “They dictate the prices,” he said, adding that the PBMs also control how and when consumers get medications. The control exerted by the PBMs have resulted in more than 150 independent pharmacies in Ohio closing, in some cases leaving entire counties without a single pharmacy.
Schieber began his career working at the former Bingman Drug Store, then spent several years as a drug sales representative. He opened his own pharmacy, then known as The Medicine Shoppe, 30 years ago. The business is now named Schieber Family Pharmacy.
